This village in the Sächische Schweiz National Park is one of the main starting points for visitors to the national park, reachable by rope ferry from the car park or railway station on the opposite river side and in the summer months by paddle steamer. Here you can relax in the village stay in one of the hotels and guest houses, enjoy some local spirit in the distillery or embark on walks and climbing expeditions in the nearby rock formations. Kurort Rathen Center is an ideal base from which to explore the Sächische Schweiz National Park. One of the best known walks from here takes you up to the Bastei Felsen 200m above the River Elbe where there is the remains of a medieval fort and a catapult aimed at the River Elbe with the intention of repelling waterborne invasion. Another path leads to a the Felsen Buhne (natural rock theatre) which is run as a commercial theatre during the summer months.
