Facts about the image, Erzgebirg Lake
This winter image a frozen Erzgebirg Lake in the Erzgebirge (eastern Germany) has been created early in the morning as can be seen by the long shadows and soft subtle cool tones of the frozen water. The Erzgebirge, literally the ore mountains is an area of outstanding natural beauty in the eastern part of Germany which has a rich mining tradition but is also famous for its handcrafts particularly wooden toys and models. The image was taken with a wide aperture, which is unusual in landscape photography, the reason for this is to enhance the painterly feeling given by the early morning mist rising off the lake itself.
The gateway to these attractive but relatively small and rolling mountains which enjoy heavy snow every winter and contain many ski runs and jumps is from either Dresden or Chemnitz (formerly Karl Marx Stadt). The most visited locations in this region include Seiffen (known as the Spielzeugdorf or toy village) renowned for its wooden toys and decorations and Oberwiesenthal on the slopes of the Fichtelberg where one of the major ski jumps used in international competition every winter is located. Another Erzgebirg winter sport attraction is the bob sleigh run at Altenberg which also attracts international competition but also offers trips for paying passengers on the four man bobsleigh.
