Facts about the image, Dresden Silhouette Panoramic
This image of the Dresden Silhouette Panoramic taken from the entrance to Pieschen Harbour looking upstream along the River Elbe at dawn shows a silhouette of the Dresden Altstadt, is in part inspired by the famous Canaletto painting depicting the view from the other side of the bridge.
The bridge that can be clearly seen is the Marienbrücke with the silhouettes of a dredger in the foreground and in the background from left to right starting immediately behind the dredger; Frauenkirche, Museum, Hofkirche, Semper Opera House, Kreuzkirche, Rathaus and Zwinger Kronentor.
Taken at dawn with the sun turning the sky bright orange behind the silhouette of the Dresden architecture this image captures all the magic of that very special time of day which is missed by much of the population as they choose to stay in their beds. The dawn effect is completed by the waters of the River Elbe reflecting the orange colours of the sky as it flows towards the camera and then onwards downstream to Magdeburg and eventually Hamburg before finally joining the North Sea at Cuxhaven on Germany’s north coast. This image is a show piece of how beautiful a simple silhouette can be when taken at the right time of day and with the right weather conditions.
